The digitalization of construction using additive manufacturing and other emerging technologies is the subject of an ASTM International and NIST workshop.
ASTM International and NIST plan to host an in-person discussion about the state of digital construction and the desired direction for the industry and technology.

ASTM International today said it will host an in-person workshop to support the development of its Roadmap for Advanced Technologies for the Digitalization of the Construction Industry.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will take place on Jan. 25 and 26, 2023, at ASTM’s global headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa.

“Digital construction is expected to have a major impact on manufacturing innovation and competitiveness,” noted Mohsen Seifi, Ph.D., ASTM International’s vice president of global manufacturing programs. “This workshop and related roadmap will play a crucial role in the adoption and implementation of digital construction moving forward.”

Workshop on digital construction

The workshop will include active discussions and structured brainstorming sessions focused on the current state and desired future state for the construction industry. It will also cover research and development needs, timelines and action items, and the challenges and opportunities associated with digital construction.

The workshop discussions will contribute to the development of a roadmap for digitalizing the construction sector to improve U.S. manufacturing innovation and competitiveness. ASTM cited the following potential benefits:

  • Increasing productivity and safety
  • Reducing carbon footprint, material waste, and the reliance on labor
  • Creating a green and sustainable construction industry
  • Enabling construction on Earth and beyond

The roadmap will focus on the following major technologies and application spaces:

  • Advanced technologies: Additive manufacturing, robotics and automation, big data, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, simulation, augmented reality, and cybersecurity
  • Key applications: Sustainable buildings, smart infrastructures, mass housing, disaster response, pandemic preparedness, and construction in space.

Workshop attendance will be limited. To ensure a range of perspectives are included in the roadmap, interested stakeholders are invited to participate in a brief survey.

About ASTM International's Center of Excellence

ASTM International said it is committed to serving global societal needs and positively impacting public health and safety, consumer confidence, and overall quality of life. The organization added that it integrates consensus standards – developed with its international membership of volunteer technical experts – and innovative services to help the world work better.

The AM CoE is a collaborative partnership representing industry, government, and academia to conduct strategic R&D to advance additive manufacturing standardization. The center also aims to accelerate development and adoption of AM by developing training and certification programs.

In addition, the center provides market intelligence, business strategy, and advisory services through Wohlers Associates, powered by ASTM International.

ASTM committees are adapting existing standards and developing new ones to support 3D printed concrete, a new technology with vast potential.
