At Automate this year, ForwardX Robotics is showcasing for the first time in North America its new AMR designed with the automotive industry in mind. The Lynx AMR tugger has a payload capacity of 3,306 lb. (1,499 kg.) and can complete heavy-duty rack towing tasks.

As automotive companies increase their production of electric and self-driving cars, they are developing new manufacturing processes and producing new components, ForwardX Robotics noted. Those changes add additional complexities, and automakers are looking to new technologies to help with production.

Autonomation demands increase for automakers making EVs

As opposed to traditional manually operated tuggers, the Lynx, thanks to its autonomy, helps carmakers produce more while reducing the need for new labor, ForwardX Robotics has argued.

“The Lynx series is designed to solve pain points in the automotive manufacturing industry. Lynx uses deep learning computer vision paired with a LIDAR-based SLAM navigation system making it suitable for stable operations in a complex environment,” the company said on Lynx's online product page.

“It works alongside personnel, other AMRs, and customers’ existing automation equipment without a need for remodeling or laying out magnetic strips or other fixed routes,” it added.

Forward X pushes to standout in North America

The robot is outfitted with a range of sensors and components including laser scanners, depth cameras, 2D cameras and 3D cameras. It offers 0.4-inch docking precision and 360° obstacle detection and avoidance to ensure the safety of materials and people on the floor, according to FowardX Robotics.

The Beijing-based company has been selling the Lynx AMR in Asia for some time. But it decided to bring the new robot to North America, as part of its push to become a bigger player on the continent.

It made its North American debut at ProMat earlier this year with its lineup of AMRs.
