International Conference for Advanced Manufacturing 2023 Adds Robotics to Additive Manufacturing in Agenda

ASTM International is inviting presenters from industry, academia, and government for its advanced manufacturing event in October.

The International Conference for Advanced Manufacturing from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C., will be an opportunity to learn about robotics and additive manufacturing.

Industrial standards organization ASTM International has put out a call for presentations for its International Conference on Advanced Manufacturing, or ICAM 2023. The event will be from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 at the Hyatt Regency – Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

The organization's Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) is hosting the conference, which is supported by more than a dozen ASTM technical committees including Committee F45 on Robotics, Automation, and Autonomous Systems. Abstracts are due by April 1.

ICAM 2023 is ASTM’s eighth annual flagship event related to standardization, qualification, and certification. It addresses industry requirements, advanced manufacturing processes, and value chains.

The aim of the conference is to bring speakers and audiences from academia, industry, and government together to explore what is needed and what is currently being developed.

Robotics joins additive manufacturing on agenda

In the past, ICAM was highly focused on additive manufacturing. However, its agenda has expanded into other areas of manufacturing including the role of robotics in response to growing interest. In 2022, ICAM introduced a robotics track, which it said was well attended and has expanded this year.

“You don’t really have advanced manufacturing without robotics,” stated Aaron Prather, director of robotics and autonomous system programs at ASTM International. “Last year’s robotics track was a great mix of researchers showing what they were developing in the lab and end users showing how they have introduced robotics to their production facilities.”

“This year, we not only want to see more of that, but also to dive into how AI and topics like interoperability are impacting robotics within advanced manufacturing,” he said.

The selection committee is made up of both academic and industry members. It is looking to assemble a program that runs from research to active deployments on the production floor, according to Prather, who also delivered the keynote at last year's Robotics Applications Conference.

ICAM specifies topics of interest

ICAM will consist of 26 symposia covering major topics and key areas in advanced and additive manufacturing. ICAM is organized by more than 100 scientific committee members, including advanced manufacturing experts from industry, academia, government and regulatory agencies, national labs, and more.

Conshohocken, Pa.-based ASTM International invited authors to submit their abstracts, outlining the scope of their presentations in less than 250 words. They should address one of the 26 conference topics, including:

  • Feedstock materials
  • Fatigue and fracture
  • Mechanical testing
  • NDE
  • Defense
  • Aviation
  • Space
  • Construction
  • Industry 4.0
  • Modeling, simulations, and digital twins
  • Robotics

A full list of conference topics can be found on the ICAM 2023 website. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to present in Washington, D.C.

“Building upon the success of the previous events, and new breadth of topics covered, ICAM 2023 will involve more ASTM committees and external stakeholders,” said ASTM International. “ICAM sets the stage to bring experts from around the world to exchange the latest developments in the field of advanced manufacturing with emphasis on the transition of research to application.”

ASTM International said ICAM has been growing from year to year.
