OTTO Motors announced today that it has launched the next generation of its heavy-class autonomous mobile robot for materials handling. The OTTO 1500 is designed to autonomously move pallet-scale loads up to 1,900 kg (4,189 lb.) through busy factories and warehouses. With a top speed of 2 meters per second (4.4 mph), OTTO 1500 can swiftly and safely deliver more payload than any other robot in its class, claimed the company.
Kitchener, Ontario-based OTTO Motors is a division of Clearpath Robotics, which in January added $5 million in financing to its Series C round of $43.4 million. OTTO's customers include General Electric and Toyota.

OTTO Motors builds on experience
OTTO Motors first introduced its OTTO 1500 autonomous mobile robot (AMR) in 2015. It has since been deployed in Fortune 500 factories around the world, accumulating more than 1 million hours of mission-critical experience, said the company. Along with its small and mid-sized counterparts, OTTO 100 and OTTO 750, the OTTO 1500 uses control software with more than 3 million hours of driving experience.
“Maximizing productivity in material handling is really about moving more materials, faster,” said Jay Judkowitz, vice president of product at OTTO Motors. “The new OTTO 1500 has been designed to provide the highest throughput, all without compromising safety.”
The new AMR builds upon the OTTO 1500 chassis and powertrain. The company said it has overhauled its control system to use only off-the-shelf industrial components, each selected for improved reliability, to maximize uptime.
“We analyzed every detail affecting AMR productivity and challenged ourselves to do more,” Judkowitz said. “We developed a patent-pending adaptive safety fieldset that improves average vehicle speed. We’ve designed superchargers to minimize time spent charging. We even made maintenance faster with easy access panels. Every detail of the OTTO 1500 has been crafted to maximize productivity.”
OTTO 1500 intended for safety, speed
Unlike manual pallet jacks and forklifts, the OTTO 1500 is an “always-on” AMR that moves heavy payloads with speed, safety, and agility in dynamic environments, said the company. OTTO 1500 is most commonly used to connect existing automated processes, such as machining centers, welding cells, packaging cells, palletizers, or stretch wrappers.
