OTTO Motors and Siemens Canada have partnered to improve AMR capabilities.
With new Siemens controllers, OTTO Motors says its autonomous mobile robots will improve performance without compromising safety, as well as add asset tracking ability.

OTTO Motors and Siemens Canada yesterday announced that they have partnered for Industry 4.0 technologies, including controls for collaborative autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and physical asset tracking using Siemens' Real Time Tracking Location Systems (RTLS).

“Siemens’ global presence and breadth of product portfolio has been clear to us for as long as we’ve been in business,” said Ryan Gariepy, chief technology officer of OTTO Motors. “Using Siemens controllers to power OTTO fleets will allow our AMRs to achieve a new level of driving performance without compromising safety. For our customers, this means maximum productivity and better ROI.”

Oakville, Ontario-based OTTO Motors is a division of Clearpath Robotics and provides mobile robots for material handling inside manufacturing facilities and warehouses. With over 3 million hours of driving experience, the company said it is trusted for mission-critical deliveries in demanding industrial environments. OTTO claimed that 70% of its customers are Fortune 500 companies, including GE and Toyota.

Siemens enables asset tracking, faster AMR development

Instead of requiring human operators to push carts or drive forklifts, OTTO said its robots can deliver materials safely, reliably, and efficiently. The company said its easy-to-use AMRs and software suite can quickly deliver value and scale to manage complex deployments.

“Siemens RTLS will enable OTTO Motors’ customers to dynamically locate autonomous mobile robots and other assets with up to 30 cm [11.8 in.] accuracy,” explained Joris Myny, senior vice president for digital industries at Siemens Canada. “The result is an optimized fleet and precise AMR routing, as well as enhanced bottleneck and collision avoidance. Any asset or person with an RTLS transponder can be seen and tracked, which opens up additional asset-tracking use cases beyond the AMR implementation.”

Siemens recently customized its industrial controller development toolchain, allowing OTTO to develop, test, and deploy controls code to better align with AMR needs. The companies said this has enabled OTTO to develop, validate, and deploy everything from minor improvements to entirely new robots into production over four times faster than previously possible.

Since 1912, Siemens Canada has focused on infrastructure, transport, and healthcare. It said it combines the physical and the digital worlds to empower customers to transform their industries and markets. The company has approximately 2,500 employees and 24 facilities across Canada.

Enterprises in automotive, consumer packaged goods, food and beverage, and electrical manufacturing use OTTO Motors to create more resilient and flexible supply chains.
