OTTO Motors this week announced a software update to increase the speed of its mobile robots. The release can improve the speed of the OTTO 1500 v1.2 by as much as 10%, claimed the company. It added that continuous software improvements ensure that its robots become faster, safer, more reliable, and more productive.

“Customers rely on us to provide the most productive and safe industrial robots as they tackle supply chain issues and target 24x7, uninterrupted operations,” stated Jay Judkowitz, vice president of product at OTTO Motors. “The latest software release significantly lowers mission completion times for our robots, directly impacting the overall throughput and ROI [return on investment] for the customers.”

“We also aim to enhance overall user experience in this release, increasing efficiency for plant managers and floor managers,” he added. “We are laser focused on continuously upgrading our product.”

AMR update increases throughput

OTTO Motors’ previous software release in June offered users tools to analyze their systems, identify risks, and optimize their material flow with autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). The company said its latest release will improve AMR speed for higher throughput.

It introduced Graph-based Planner, an improved robot path-planning method for faster mission planning, more predictable routes, and smoother and faster turning. The company said it will result in lower takt times and a higher ROI.

OTTO Motors said the average speed of its AMRs will increase as they get smarter at detecting small objects on the ground from a distance. This enables them to maneuver swiftly and smoothly around any obstacle, it added.

Software designed for ease of use, faster troubleshooting

OTTO Motors also added an Auto-localization feature, which triggers robots to localize on their own with one click of a button. The results are nearly instantaneous and require no effort from the user, according to the company.

A new bag-collection tool can help operators and floor managers get speedy troubleshooting support for 3D cameras on OTTO's AMRs. It will enable users to capture video data with minimal effort and help them maximize uptime, the company said.

In addition, customers can now experiment with Blockly, a visual programming editor that allows them to tell robots what to do without having to write code. Using this simple interface, customers can create user-defined workflows for the robots and implement custom handling of events like safety stops, said OTTO.

OTTO Motors exhibits at AMR & Logistics Week

Kitchener, Ontario-based OTTO Motors provides AMRs for factories and warehouses. The unit of Clearpath Robotics Inc. said it has more than 3 million hours of driving experience.

OTTO Motors said its robots and software have tackled repetitive and dangerous tasks, allowing humans to handle more specialized jobs. It said it has enabled automotive, consumer goods, and other manufacturers reduce materials handling costs to as low as $9 per hour. The company said 70% of its customers are Fortune 500 companies, including leading brands such as GE and Toyota.

The latest features are on display at AMR and Logistics Week in Boston from Oct. 11 through 13. The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) is hosting the event at the Hynes Convention Center. See Robotics 24/7's special coverage page.

In June, OTTO Motors took Automate 2022 to new heights showcasing our full fleet of autonomous mobile robots running on our latest software release, sharing customer success stories and highlighting our powerful analytics tool, OTTO Fleet Analytics, to the market.
