Qualcomm has released seven new products for AI at the edge.
Qualcomm has released seven new products that it said will help with Internet of Things and AI applications including connected healthcare, logistics management, and warehousing.

Mobile robots, autonomous vehicles, and aerial drones are a part of the growing Internet of Things ecosystem. Qualcomm Technologies Inc. today announced seven new products to boost edge computing, networking capabilities, and digital transformation efforts. The San Diego-based company said its systems range from entry-level to premium tier for a variety of applications in indutries including transportation, logistics, warehousing, retail, and healthcare.

“Qualcomm Technologies is uniquely positioned to lead the IoT ecosystem forward with our systems-level approach,” stated Jeff Lorbeck, senior vice president and general manager of connected smart systems at Qualcomm. “Along with the recently announced Qualcomm 315 5G IoT modem, these new IoT solutions further exemplify our commitment to driving global digital transformation and providing a portfolio of solutions to transform industrial and enterprise IoT applications to achieve cutting-edge performance and seamless connectivity.”

Qualcomm Technologies is a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., a leader in 5G networking and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. The company provides semiconductors, research and development functions, and wireless products and services. It said it currently has more than 13,000 IoT customers.

Qualcomm offers QC models for different IoT applications

Qualcomm Technologies said its seven new IoT products offer wide range of capabilities smart devices and connected systems. They come with extended-life hardware and software options for achieving long-term support for a minimum of eight years, it added.

QCS6490/QCM6490

The Qualcomm QCS6490 and QCM6490 are targeted at connected healthcare, logistics management, retail, transportation, and warehousing. The company said they are its first optimized IoT products built to deliver features such as global 5G connectivity and Wi-Fi 6E for high-tier IoT devices.

With the Kryo 585 CPU architecture, these systems are designed to enable commercial IoT applications such as retail point-of-sale (POS) kiosks. Equipped to support 5G mmWave/Sub-6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6E, this offering can enable the latest generation of ruggedized handhelds and tablets, industrial scanners, and human-machine interface systems, claimed Qualcomm.

It added that the CS6490 and QCM6490 feature powerful connections and reduced latency, along with dynamic triple image signal processors (ISPs) and advanced edge AI and compute based on the sixth-generation Qualcomm Artificial Intellience Engine. They can provide performance at reduced power compared with previous-generation solutions, said Qualcomm.

QCS2290/QCM2290

The company said its Qualcomm QCS2290 and Qualcomm QCM2290 are entry-level offerings including LTE connectivity, upgraded features, and memory support for low-power consumption. Equipped with the Cortex A53 CPU architecture, the system is designed to be cost-effective, delivering higher graphics capabilities, greater performance, improved power usage, and better quality images, Qualcomm said.

The platform is well-suited for retail POS, industrial handheld, tracking, and camera applications, it noted. In addition, the QCS2290/QCM2290 baseband chip is pin-topin compatible with QCS4290/QCM4290, helping customers use hardware and software across various IoT devices to reduce cost and time to market.

QCS8250

Qualcomm Technologies said its Qualcomm QCS8250 is suitable for connected healthcare, digital signage, retail, and video collaboration. The company described it as its “next-generation premium-tier offering, optimized to deliver maximum performance for compute-intensive camera and edge AI applications” with support for Qualcomm Wi-Fi 6 and 5G connectivity.

The processor is designed to deliver premium-level performance through the Qualcomm Kryo 585 CPU architecture, the Qualcomm AI Engine, and an ISP. The ISP can support up to cameras concurrently with encode at up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, according to the company.

The QCS8250 offers a new neural processing unit (NPU) for intuitive AI in addition to machine learning for compute-intensive IoT applications, said Qualcomm. It is also designed for applications such as smart cameras and AI hubs. The system is intended to deliver performance and, thanks to Qualcomm's third-party ecosystem, flexibility to accelerate deployment and commercialization at scale.

QCS4290/QCM4290

The Qualcomm QCS4290 and Qualcomm QCM4290 are aimed at cameras, industrial handhelds used in logistics and warehousing, and security panels. They offer maximum mid-tier benefits delivering greater performance, said the company.

With the Kryo260 CPU architecture for increased speeds and robust on-device performance, in addition to the third-generation Qualcomm AI Engine, this platform can deliver performance, dynamic camera capabilities, and connectivity options such as LTE Cat13 and Wi-Fi 6-ready, said Qualcomm. “Devices based on this new solution will help enable productive and efficient work environments,” the company said.

The Qualcomm QCS8250, Qualcomm QCS4290/ QCM4290, and Qualcomm QCS2290/ QCM2290 solutions are available now. The Qualcomm QCS6490/ QCM6490 solutions are expected to be available in second half of 2021.
