Global logistics provider Rhenus Hong Kong has worked with Geek+ to deploy mobile robots and goods-to-person automation for the first time in its warehouse.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted global supply chains and exacerbated labor shortages, more operations are adopting automation. Rhenus Hong Kong and Geekplus Technology Co. today said they have successfully deployed autonomous mobile robots at a Rhenus warehouse in Asia.

“Our goal is to provide the best and most innovative logistics service to achieve faster and more flexible movement of goods, to cater to the rapid growth in e-commerce,” stated Cliff Xu, CEO of Rhenus Air & Ocean Greater China. “By working closely with Geek+, we not only realize warehouse digitalization, but also improve operational efficiency and accuracy, translating to greater cost savings for customers in the long run.”

Established in 2002, Rhenus Hong Kong provides air, ocean, and land (truck and rail) freight, as well as warehousing and consolidation services. Its warehouse, strategically located at the ocean port and near the airport, is designed for storage and distribution services serving both Hong Kong and mainland China.

In January 2021, Rhenus Greater China launched the Rhenus Integrated Solutions and (Re-) Engineering (RISE), which it said can improve operational transparency and visibility of warehousing processes through data-driven decisions.

Rhenus Hong Kong is part of The Rhenus Group, a global logistics specialist with annual turnover of €5.4 billion ($6.11 billion U.S.). About 33,500 employees work at 820 sites and develop innovative solutions along the complete supply chain, said the company.

Rhenus invests in innovation for performance

Rhenus Hong Kong said it has been investing in innovative technologies in the region since 2019. This includes warehouse automation to improve efficiency. The company added that this is part of its ongoing strategy to tap into smart logistics to build a sustainable and robust supply chain.

With the autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) from Geek+, Rhenus Hong Kong said it can handle large volumes of orders, flexibly meet rapidly changing SKUs, and improve order-fulfilment performance. The Hong Kong site will be the first smart Rhenus warehouse in the Asia-Pacific.

The Rhenus Hong Kong warehouse will use Geek+ goods-to-person systems. Robots will automatically bring goods to the operators, achieving 99.99% accuracy, said the company. They will also minimize aisle space and maximize warehouse storage, it said.

In addition, Geek+ said its proprietary algorithms will optimize order combinations and adjust the layouts in real time. In the Rhenus Hong Kong warehouse, more than 2,000 SKUs of cosmetic products are constantly arranged according to popularity and expiration date, noted the company.

Geek+ supports e-commerce growth

“We believe that the smart warehouse upgrade is the only answer to the rapid growth of e-commerce business and growing customer expectations,” said Lit Fung, vice president and managing director of Asia-Pacific (APAC), U.K., and the Americas at Geek+. “We will continue to support Rhenus with tailored solutions that best fit their multi-customer business.”

Founded in 2015, Geek+ has more than 1,500 employees, with offices in Germany, the U.K., the U.S., Japan, China, and Singapore. It applies artificial intelligence and robotics for warehouses and supply chain management.

The Beijing-based company said it has 300 global customers and has sold more than 20,000 robots worldwide.
