Velodyne Lidar Signs Multi-Year Agreement with Boston Dynamics

The company said its component technology allows robots to understand where they are even during rainstorms.

At least for the next few years, Velodyne's lidar technology will be inside Boston Dynamics robots.

Velodyne Lidar Inc. yesterday announced that Boston Dynamics will use the company’s lidar sensors in its robots as part of a multi-year agreement.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company said its lidar sensors let mobile robots (AMR) operate autonomously in various conditions. That includes varying temperatures and rainstorms. With its sensors, robots have access to real-time 3D perception data for localization, mapping, object classification, and object tracking, the company said.

Boston Dynamics robots provide advanced mobility, dexterity and intelligence that enable automation in unfamiliar and unpredictable settings,” said Laura Wrisley, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Velodyne Lidar. “Equipped with Velodyne’s lidar sensors, their robots can autonomously navigate complex environments. They can safely avoid obstacles and find the fastest route to perform vital tasks in environments from manufacturing plants and construction sites to distribution centers and warehouses.”

Lidar technology will help Boston Dynamics extend robot capabilities

Waltham, Mass.-based Boston Dynamics said it selected Velodyne’s sensors to continue to “extend the capabilities of its mobile robots.” The company makes three robots - Spot, a four-legged robot used for inspections and other tasks, Atlas, its humanoid robot, and Stretch, its truck unloading palletizing robot it launched earlier this year.

Boston Dynamics founder and former CEO Marc Raibert was recognized at the 2022 Engelberger Robotics Awards at the Automate show in Detroit earlier this month. Raibert was recognized for his contribution to technology. The award show is hosted by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3).

“The Engelberger Robotics Award is named after the late Joseph F. Engelberger, known throughout the world as the founding force behind industrial robotics,” said A3.
