Containerized storage considers ergonomics

The Containerized Storage System is not a conventional pickwall or a dense automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS), but it continues Amazon’s focus on reducing worker strain.

“In many Amazon fulfillment centers, employees currently pick or stow items onto mobile shelves as products move through the process of fulfilling customer orders,” said the company. “To reduce the need for employees to reach up, bend down, or climb ladders when retrieving items, we’ve been developing a robotic system that delivers products to employees in a more ergonomically friendly manner.”

By choreographing robots and bins with software, Amazon’s new system determines which pods have the products to be picked and brings them to employees, who don’t have to strain to reach them. “As a result, our employees benefit from a more comfortable, safer experience,” claimed the company.
