ASTM International Developing Standards for Testing Robot Assembly

Found in Robotics News & Content, with a score of 64.99

September 11, 2023

ASTM International’s F45 committee on robotics, automation, and autonomous systems is seeking participation in the development of proposed standards for testing and recording assembly capabilities of robot systems. The proposed standards—WK87213 and WK87214—will provide a reliable and repeatable means for testing assembly capabilities of robot systems, according to ASTM committee member Kenny Kimble, a mechanical engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The proposed standards also include a practice for recording the testing setup and configuration so that users can create and compare test results across the robotics community. “The proposed standards will be most useful to…

…humanoids as they evolve, such as those proposed by ASTM International's committee on legged robots.” “For mobile manipulation, the ability to reach high and the ground and to take up roughly a square foot is an advantage,” Cardenas added. “Instead of relying on a heavy base like an AMR, a humanoid can just widen its stance.” Apollo also includes perception-based behaviors to slow or stop if someone enters a perimeter or impact zone, respectively, he said. Apptronik worked with argodesign to ensure that Argo's design balanced complexity and approachability. Digital panels on the robot's face and chest are intended to…

May 31, 2023

…Aaron Prather, director of robotics and autonomous systems at ASTM International, a global standards group, said in an interview with Robotics 24/7. But standards bodies must work fast to keep up with the changing industry. “We have good bones is what I would say,” Prather said. “But we've got a lot of work to do just to keep up. Also, we need to address some of the bureaucracy that exists within the standards framework.” While many safety guideliness are voluntary in the U.S., companies have been incentivized to implement them to increase the safety of their systems. And in other…
