A Warehouse Control System (WCS) is software that directs and coordinates automated material-handling equipment within a warehouse or distribution center.
A WCS can communicate with and control equipment such as conveyors, sorters, AS/RS and other automated machinery. It translates higher-level instructions into commands that equipment can execute in real time.
WCS software generally operates closer to the equipment layer than a Warehouse Management System (WMS), which manages inventory and warehouse processes.
As warehouse architectures evolve, the boundaries among various systems, including WMS, WES, WCS and other control systems, can vary by vendor and deployment.
