The HRC piloted a course to equip educators with skills to integrate drones into their classrooms. It is designed to prepare teachers for the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test.

The Heartland Robotics Cluster (HRC) recently announced the results of its latest education and training activities, spanning grade-school programs up to the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test.

The HRC said it has been actively fostering innovation and education across the Midwest.

From the appointment of Erin Sorensen at Northeast Nebraska Community College's iHub to the rapid progress of the iHub's construction, HRC said its partners are making significant strides in technological advancement. This summer's HRC robotics camps inspired young minds, while a new drone course pilot program is equipping educators with skills.

Looking ahead, HRC said its Heartland Robotics and Automation Conference 2024 will bring together industry leaders, educators, and innovators to explore the latest advancements in robotics and automation. The conference is scheduled for Nov. 22 at the Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln, Neb.

New talent, construction at Northeast Community College iHub

The HRC said it is delighted to share that Erin Sorensen, MBA, has joined Northeast Community College (NECC) to lead the iHub team. Sorensen brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role, where she will drive forward their mission of innovation and excellence.

In addition to expanding its team, construction of the iHub is progressing swiftly and promises to place NECC at the forefront of technological innovation in downtown Norfolk, Neb., the HRC said. Once completed, the facility will offer students and the community access to resources to develop hardware and manufacture prototypes.

Education and training from elementary to FAA certifications

This summer, NECC iHub hosted a series of robotics camps for grade school students, which the HRC said ignited a passion for technology and engineering in young minds. These camps provided hands-on experiences with robotics, promoting teamwork, problem-solving skills, and creativity.

In collaboration with the Nebraska Innovation Studio, a new drone course was piloted to equip educators with the skills necessary to integrate drone technology into their classrooms. The three-day program is designed to prepare teachers for the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test, also known as the Part 107 exam, which is required to operate drones commercially.

The course includes training on drone regulations, airspace laws, weather, and hands-on flying time. This initiative is part of the Heartland Robotics Cluster, aimed at expanding robotics training and enhancing STEM education across the region.
