The food industry can benefit from increasing automation, from increasing traceability and hygiene to mitigating workforce strain and shortages. RIOS Corp. today said it has received global recognition from StartUs Insights as an industry leader in helping the food sector with robotics.

“This is an honor to be recognized for our leadership in end-to-end AI powered robotic workcell implementations for the food industry,” stated Dr. Bernard Casse, founder and CEO of RIOS. “We’re building robotic workcells of the future, serving assembly lines in factories, warehouses, and supply chain operations. Our full-stack technology impacts food production and assembly, as well as picking and packing operations.”

Founded in 2018, RIOS said its mission is to apply artificial intelligence and robotics to transform labor-intensive facilities into the smart factories of the future. The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company said it is deploying automation that integrates with existing workflows in factories, warehouses, or other supply chain operations.

StartUs turns focus to food

StartUs Insights is dedicated to mapping the world’s information on innovation, emerging companies, and technologies. It reviewed 138 global companies specifically serving the food sector out of more than 1 million global companies using criteria such as founding year, location, funding raised, and more.

Vienna, Austria-based StartUs focused on companies specializing in robotics that affect business operations and warehouse management.

"Sorting food items of variable packaging, size, texture, and volume is a cumbersome process at warehouses," noted StartUs Insights. "When manually executed, the processes take time and are error-prone. Therefore, food technology startups provide automated solutions to intelligently sort items and place them in their respective bins using advanced robotics and artificial intelligence."

"U.S.-based startup RIOS Intelligent Machines offers picking, sorting, and placing robots for different food items," said the firm. "The robots are specifically useful for picking and sorting breakable food items like chips and eggs."

"RIOS DX-1 is a full-stack, multipurpose dexterous robot that interacts with objects in both static and dynamic applications, such as bin picking and moving conveyor belts," StartUs said. "The robot also works in changing warehouse environments and automatically adjusts to complex manipulation tasks. Apart from this, RIOS Intelligent Machines provides factory automation-as-a-service solutions for the food industry."

RIOS develops smart sorting robots, food-grade workcells

RIOS Intelligent Machines said its sorting robots can address the significant labor shortage and labor-intensive processes, such as sorting food items.

The company said its workcells can work in changing warehouse environments and interact with objects in both static and dynamic applications.

In addition, RIOS said it manufactures food-grade workcells to automate manual tasks of handling and sorting food. Quality control, item handling, and tray management are some of the applications for which the company's high-speed robotic workcell can help meet production demand.

RIOS robotic workcells automate production line and tray loading. The robotic workcells provide seamless end-to-end process automation to streamline industrial baking, steaming, cooling, freezing, material transport, food preparation, and proofing throughout the food manufacturing process. RIOS robots are capable of automating movement for all standard size pans and customized needs.
