Warehouse robotics integrator Exotec recently announced the installation of its Skypod system at Lane Automotive’s Watervliet, MI facility. Robotics integrator Conveyco also provided integration services. The system has been fully operational since December 19, 2023.

Lane Automotive, an aftermarket racing and high-performance automotive parts company, implemented the Skypod system to automate distribution operations. The company stocks over 100,000 automotive parts in its southwest Michigan facility. Lane Automotive regularly fulfills time-sensitive customer orders, many of which require expedited picking and shipping just ahead of special events and competition weekends.

“The seasonal nature of our business generally sees its peaks between March and June, and prior to Exotec and Conveyco’s complimentary automation solutions, this volume could stress our operational capacity,” said James MacEachern, Lane Automotive COO.

Exotec Skypod AS/RS increases throughput for Lane Automotive

Exotec’s Skypod system is a goods-to-person automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). Exotec received the 2023 MVP Excellence Award in Technology & Solutions from the Manhattan Associates for its work with French auto parts distributor Alliance Automotive Group.

“We had to identify the right goods-to-person robotics and integration partners that could easily integrate with our existing automation and distribution ecosystem to help transform our operations for years to come,” said David Meadow, Lane Automotive CIO. “Exotec and Conveyco not only delivered on this transformation, they were key partners in our distribution automation journey.”

Lane Automotive deployed Exotec’s Skypod system to manage its inventory while improving the speed and accuracy of its pick, pack, and ship operations. A fleet of 62 ARMs, 5 picking stations, and 59,600 storage bins were deployed at its distribution center.

“Our project with Lane Automotive showcases the immense potential of warehouse robotics in revolutionizing even the most challenging logistics operations swiftly and efficiently,” said Stanislas Normand, managing director of Exotec North America.

Lane Automotive expects to realize a sixfold increase in throughput as a result of integrating Exotec’s Skypod AS/RS into its operations.
