Seegrid Says Palion Lift Autonomous Mobile Robot Has Industry Leading Perception

The Seegrid IQ autonomy technology is built on the company's years of R&D and recent acquisition of Box Robotics.

Seegrid says that the Palion Lift, its first autonomous lift truck, includes its latest Seegrid IQ technology and is the only robot of its kind in the market with 3D perception.

Seegrid Corp. today announced new details about the technology that powers the Seegrid Palion autonomous mobile robot, or AMR. The Pittsburgh-based company said its lift truck is equipped with the most advanced generation of its Seegrid IQ autonomy technology. It also claimed that Palion is the only robotic lift on the market with industry-leading 3D perception.

“Seegrid and its AMRs are undergoing massive growth and eclipsing alternative material handling solutions to increase productivity and safety as logistics, e-commerce, and manufacturing facilities demand flexibility, reliability, and scalability,” said Jim Rock, CEO of Seegrid. “Palion Lift AMRs provide next-level, 360° safety to flawlessly execute vertical movements and reliably self-navigate in busy, ever-changing industrial environments.”

Seegrid said it combines AMRs, enterprise software, and services for a connected materials handling system that is available through a robotics-a-service (RaaS) model. The company was recently named the No. 1 mobile robot provider in the U.S. by Interact Analysis, an international market research firm for the supply chain automation industry.

Seegrid IQ result of legacy of innovation

Seegrid said its vision-guided AMRs benefit from decades of innovation. Hans Moravec founded the company in 2003 and is Seegrid's chief scientist. The company added that Seegrid IQ fuses data from cameras, lidar, and machine learning models with its proprietary 3D computer vision system to provide safe and reliable material handling.

“Seegrid IQ, the company’s proprietary autonomy technology, brings together our breakthrough 3D vision-based navigation technology pioneered by Dr. Hans Moravec with our best-in-class 3D situational awareness capabilities,” said Todd Graves, chief technology officer of Seegrid. “Seegrid AMRs have the intelligence to perceive, plan, and control their movement, enabling them to reliably and safely perform in highly dynamic, complex, and fast-moving industrial settings.”

In February, Seegrid premiered the Palion Lift. The lift truck is designed to safely automate the movement of palletized goods in workflows that involve transporting payloads up to 3,500 lb. (1,587.5 kg) throughout customer operations, retrieving them, and securely placing them at heights of up to 6 ft. (1.8 m) for an end-to-end solution.

Mobile robot R&D accelerates

In May, Seegrid announced the creation of its Blue Labs dedicated research-and-development group. The in-house group specializes in advanced technologies for the company’s future products.

Seegrid added that its 2020 acquisition of Box Robotics has accelerated its work on Seegrid IQ to deliver enhanced perception and productivity to its AMR fleet.

“Our logistics, e-commerce, and manufacturing customers need proven, scalable automation solutions to retain their competitive advantage in an era of relentless consumer demand,” said Rock, whom Ernst & Young has recognized as an “entrepreneur of the year” finalist. “Palion Lift is just the tip of the iceberg as to what Seegrid IQ will deliver to the materials handling industry.”

Jeff Christensen, vice president of product at Seegrid, describes how the company's technology can help supply chains.
