A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is software used to manage inventory and warehouse operations, including receiving, putaway, storage, picking, packing and shipping.
A WMS typically serves as the system of record for inventory: what products are in the facility, how much inventory exists, and where that inventory is stored.
In an automated warehouse, the WMS may exchange information with Warehouse Execution Systems (WES), Warehouse Control Systems (WCS), fleet management software, robots, conveyors, AS/RS and other automation.
The WMS generally focuses on inventory and warehouse-management functions, while WES and WCS focus more heavily on executing and controlling physical workflows.
