Keyence's SR-5000 code reader works at high speed and has a wide field of view and depth of field, enabling it to gather data at a rate comparable with the AmbiSort sortation robot.

Ambi Robotics Inc. yesterday announced that it is working with Keyence Corporation of America to integrate Keyence's SR-5000 Series logistics code reader with its AmbiSort high-speed parcel-sortation system. The partners said this will help increase throughput for global delivery brands.

“Our AI-powered robotic systems work at high speeds and can handle a wide range of unique items, which meant we needed an industry-leading code reader that could do the same,” said Jim Liefer, CEO of Ambi Robotics. “In addition to exceptional customer service, the products Keyence develops and deploys are always best in class. From flawless design to ease of implementation, and most importantly, performance, Keyence was the clear solution for Ambi.”

Founded in 2018 as Ambidexterous Laboratories, Ambi Robotics said it is developing artificial intelligence and robotics for supply chain applications. The Emeryville, Calif.-based startup said its systems can help e-commerce operations scale to meet demand and empower humans to work smarter.

The AmbiOS AI operating system uses Dex-Net simulation-to-reality technology to operate highly-dexterous robotic systems. Ambi Robotics raised $6.1 million in seed funding in March.

Keyence speed reader keeps up with AmbiSort

Since 1974, Keyence has developed and manufactured industrial automation and inspection equipment. The Itasca, Ill.-based company's products include code readers, laser markers, machine vision systems, measuring systems, and sensors. As a direct sales organization, Keyence said its sales engineers can quickly respond to customers' technical product questions quickly.

The Keyence SR-5000 code reader is powered by multi-core parallel processing and works at high speed to read codes from unstructured, complex scenes, said the company.

The code reader also offers the latest in ultra-wide field of view and depth-of-field reading technology that can capture data from the broad assortment of unique items AmbiSort can pick and pack, said Keyence.

Ambi Robotics said the partnership will enable it to scale its AI-powered parcel-sorting systems to its customer base before this year's peak shopping season. The AmbiSort system and SR-5000 will work together to ensure that businesses can maximize uptime, throughput, and accuracy with each pick, said the companies.

“We enjoy working with companies that complement our innovative solutions,” said David Shillaker, national director of barcode reading at Keyence. “The speed at which AmbiSort operates puts the ultra-fast code reading capabilities of the SR-5000 to work. This is a very exciting partnership for us as Ambi Robotics quickly scales its AmbiSort systems to global shipping brands.”

Ambi Sort is a configurable, AI-powered robotic sorting system that can handle millions of unique parcels, said Ambi Robotics.
