Locus Robotics’ LocusBot Completed Over 230M Picks During Holiday Shopping Peak

Locus Robotics this week announced that its LocusBots picked over 230 million units during the peak holiday shopping period. The picks were completed between Sept. 1 to Dec. 1, according to Locus. Last year, the robots completed 110 million picks during the same period.

“It is now clear that scalable, cost-efficient robotics automation is an operational must-have as volumes continue to increase and the labor shortages persist,” stated Rick Faulk, CEO of Locus Robotics, in a release.

“Locus is proud to help our customers again meet the seasonal challenge with robust, enterprise-scale automation solutions that position them for success today and in the future,” he added.  

The LocusBot is the Wilmington, Mass.-based company’s cart-picking mobile robot, which it claimed can increase productivity over traditional cart-picking systems by two to three times. The company said LocusBots are being used at more than 230 sites around the world, and some of those sites have more than 500 LocusBots in use.  

During the peak holiday season this year, LocusBots averaged 3.3 million units pick per day, according to Locus. That is double compared to last year, it said.

The company cited Saleforce.com, which reported a record $281 billion of online global sales occurred between Thanksgiving day and Cyber Monday.

The news come several weeks after the AMR maker reported that it has raised $117 million in a Series F fundraising round. The company also recently highlighted that its robots have done more than 1 billion picks in warehouses.

Cyber Week had a major impact on e-commerce sales

Cyber Week 2022 continued several notable industry trends that first appeared in 2021, Locus Robotic noted. Retailers are now preparing for peak season earlier and earlier to account for supply chain concerns and to ensure they have enough available product. Additionally, online shopping and mobile ordering continue to play a bigger and bigger role.

Locus noted that online spending increased by 8.6% compared to last year and mobile ordering grew more than 15%.  

“By way of comparison, it took Locus 1,542 days to pick its first 100 million units and just 40 days for the most recent 100 million picks. Locus robots now average more than three million picks per day around the world,” the company said.

“LocusBots have traveled more than 20 million miles in customers' warehouses, the equivalent of more than 670 times around the Earth or 35 round trips to the Moon.”
