Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) use intelligent navigation to transport materials, support fulfillment and automate workflows in warehouses, factories and other facilities.

An Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) is a mobile robot that uses onboard sensors, software, mapping and computing to navigate dynamically through an environment without relying on a fixed physical guide path.

Unlike an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV), which typically follows a predefined route, an AMR can plan its own path, detect obstacles and reroute as conditions change. AMRs are commonly used for material transport, order fulfillment, picking, sorting, inspection and other tasks in warehouses, factories, hospitals, and commercial facilities.

AMRs can range from simple transport robots to more advanced systems equipped with robotic arms or other manipulation capabilities.

Industry terminology is evolving, with the term Industrial Mobile Robot used for specific classes of mobile robots.

Related terms: AGV, SLAM, LiDAR, Fleet Management, Mobile Manipulator
