Theobroma said its new JAGUAR SBC-RK3588-AMR single-board computer is designed to support reliable autonomous mobile robot applications.

Theobroma Systems Design and Consulting GmbH yesterday released the JAGUAR SBC-RK3588-AMR, a single-board computer designed for use in robust and reliable autonomous mobile robots, or AMRs. Typical applications include industrial automation, agriculture and horticulture, construction, retail intralogistics, and hospitality, said the Vienna-based company.

“On a single board, JAGUAR provides a cost-efficient and optimized processing platform for autonomous mobile robots to be produced in series,” stated Dr. Stefan Roth, managing director of Theobroma Systems, in a release.

“It comes along with a board support package (BSP) that is optimally configured to the hardware and runs on Linux supported by Debian and Yocto,” he added. “JAGUAR helps significantly shorten the product development cycle of our customers.”

Theobroma Systems said it develops and manufactures reliable and robust system on modules (SoM), single-board computers (SBC), and full-custom design devices (FCD) for a global customer base. The company claimed that its embedded systems are the basis of smart devices in the global Internet of Things (IoT).

It also offers development kits for evaluation purposes, as well as technical services along the full product life cycle. Theobroma Systems, a part of Cherry SE Corp., is certified according to the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (ISO/IEC 15408)

For example, it said it meets the security standards of the German healthcare telematics infrastructure.

Theobroma promises robot performance

Theobroma Systems said its modules combine application-specific performance and cost efficiency. They are useful for a wide range of applications, from AMRs, digital healthcare, smart retail, and digital signage all the way to video surveillance, it asserted.

JAGUAR features Rockchip’s high-end, ARM-based SOC RK3588. A variety of interfaces allow the integration of a broad range of sensors, actuators, and communication modules such as high-resolution cameras, lidar, and time-of-flight (ToF) sensors, said the company.

The octa-core CPU and the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) provide the necessary processing power for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and for detecting obstacles to avoid collisions while navigating autonomously, explained Theobroma Systems.

The company said its new computer can provide peak performance for AMRs. The RK3588 features four ARM Cortex-A76 at 2.4 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 at 1.8 GHz, a Mali G610-GPU, and an NPU with up to 6 TOPS (trillions of operations per second).

JAGUAR opens up a wide range of possibilities for AI and machine learning applications, Theobroma Systems said.

System has multiple interfaces, single power supply

Two SuperSpeed USB 3.1 interfaces enable high-resolution cameras, stereo cameras, or sensors such as 2D and 3D lidar, as well as ToF sensors to be connected. Four MIPI-CSI interfaces allow the cost-efficient connection of high-resolution cameras, said Theobroma Systems.

CANBUS, RS-485, and Gigabit Ethernet “ensure seamless integration” into mobile robots, it said. Two PCIe slots host LTE, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth and an NVMe/SSD.

The computer also includes an optional “mezzanine” extension board, which plugs into a dedicated port, enables the use of a wide range of additional interfaces.

The compact 135 x 93 mm (5.3 x 3.6 in.) JAGUAR SBC board runs on a single power source with a voltage range of 12 to 24 volts. While consumption is a moderate 18 watts under load, it delivers up to 35 watts for devices connected via PCIe and USB, noted Theobroma Systems.

The RK3588 processor is located on the bottom of the printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) as the highest element, which allows for a simplified thermal connection to the housing, the company said.

Ready for secure cloud services

JAGUAR’s secure element is Common Criteria (EAL6+)-certified. It ensures government-grade security for identification and key storage.

This enables cloud services, such as remote software management and preventive device management, to be rendered in accordance with the highest level of cybersecurity.
