Comau’s S-Family hollow-wrist six-axis articulated robots are designed for applications outside automotive including foundry, battery manufacturing, and food and beverage handling.

Industrial automation systems provider Comau recently debuted its new S-Family small hollow-wrist robot arms at Automate 2024. The trade show was held May 6-9 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois. Attendance was free.

A3 said this year’s show is the biggest yet, featuring more than 365,000 square feet of exhibit space, over 800 exhibitors, and an expected 30,000 registrants, with learning and networking opportunities. Attendees are able to see the latest in robotics, machine vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and motion control.

“Comau’s new S-Family of small, high-speed robots combines efficiency and technical excellence with the features and functionality required for effective deployment within new markets and dedicated application areas,” said Nicole Clement, chief business unit leader for advanced automation solutions. “Our commitment to making automation easier to install and use, especially within non-automotive markets where automation is growing fast, is yet another way Comau is bringing the power of automation to an increasingly diverse sector of industries and applications.”

S-Family offers IP68 element resistance and energy efficiency

The S-Family of six-axis articulated robots with compact footprints and multiple mounting positions can increase robot density and can access small spaces and tight areas that are difficult to reach with other robots. The robots can be mounted on the floor, wall, or ceiling to optimize space without sacrificing performance.

S-Family robots are designed for applications requiring accuracy and speed while ensuring full protection from elements including water, dust and other contaminants. With their protective IP68-rated element-resistant hollow-wrist design, the electrical and auxiliary cabling runs inside the wrist. The robots feature fully-integrated arc and gigabit style dressings, which help remove layout constraints. Comau said its design can reduce cable kinking, breakage, and subsequent maintenance costs. 

S-Family robots have been tested and certified for energy efficiency in accordance with Fraunhofer procedures and are available in two different load configurations between 13 and 18 kilograms, about 28 to 40 pounds, with a 1700 millimeter, about 67 inch, reach and a repeatability of +/- 0.03 millimeters, about 0.001 inches.

The S-Family can be used for automated arc welding, foundry, automotive, and electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing processes, food and beverage handling, and general assembly applications. Characterized by their historical red robot design, Comau said the robots also reflect its dedication to making automation more accessible to diverse and non-automotive industries.
