The CHAMP Challenge, launched by MassRobotics and Chewy, seeks innovative solutions to automate handling large, bulky items.

MassRobotics and Chewy have unveiled the CHAMP (Chewy Autonomous Mobile Picking) Challenge, a robotics competition aimed at improving warehouse automation. The challenge invites developers to design systems capable of efficiently handling heavy and awkwardly shaped items in confined warehouse spaces.

The challenge focuses on automating the grasping, lifting, and placement of large, bulky items like dog food bags and cat litter pails. Organizers aim to improve operational efficiency, promote worker safety, and advance robotics innovation in logistics. The competition features a $30,000 prize pool, and the winning team also earns the opportunity to collaborate with Chewy.

“We are thrilled to partner with Chewy on the CHAMP Challenge, inviting innovators to address one of the most complex challenges in robotics today," said Tom Ryden, Executive Director of MassRobotics. "By bringing together fresh perspectives and advanced technology, we aim to inspire solutions that will push the boundaries of automation in warehouse logistics.”

Robots in the challenge must autonomously grasp and lift items from pallets, place them into boxes while maximizing space and stability, and operate safely around humans.

“At Chewy, innovation isn't just a goal — it's in our DNA," added Tim Foley, Chewy's Senior Director of Fulfillment Technology. "We're embarking on a transformative journey to reshape warehouse operations while creating a better experience for our customers and team members alike.”
