In the popular Frozen film series, the main characters, Anna and Elsa, sing “Do you wanna build a snowman?”
Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) took this to heart.
At Disneyland Paris, ahead of the opening of the theme park’s newest land, “World of Frozen,” Olaf the snowman from Frozen roamed the land with Disney executives in the company’s latest robotic innovation.
In a blog post, Walt Disney Imagineering explained how it transformed the magical snowman from Arendelle into a walking robot that can interact with guests at Disney theme parks worldwide.

“Olaf presents a far greater challenge: an animated character with non-physical movements,” wrote Kyle Laughling, senior vice president of R&D at Walt Disney Imagineering, in the post. “To make Olaf as authentic as possible, the team used a branch of artificial intelligence called reinforcement learning, pushing the limits of hardware to achieve the creative intent of the artists. It takes humans years to master walking and even longer to perform graceful motions. Deep reinforcement learning helps him acquire these skills in a fraction of the time.”
WDI said that the robot, which can “speak and engage in conversations, creating a truly one-of-a-kind experience,” will participate in the Arendelle Bay Show at World of Frozen, inside Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris, and make limited-time special appearances at World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
The Olaf robot represents another breakthrough for Walt Disney Imagineering and the field of robotics. BDX droids from the Star Wars franchise have been roaming Disney parks for several years. The self-balancing H.E.R.B.I.E. from Fantastic Four made its debut at Disneyland in California during the summer of 2025.
But Olaf, with the ability to interact with guests through AI and reinforcement learning capabilities, is the latest technological advancement for Disney.
