In most warehouses, human workers must lift and move heavy or bulky packages, which can cause injury over time. Amazon said its new Cardinal workcell uses AI and computer vision to pick a package from a pile, read its label, and place it in a GoCart.
By moving sortation earlier in the shipping process and automating batch-based work, Amazon said it expects smoother operations. The company added that it’s testing a prototype that can handle packages weighing up to 50 lb. (22.6 kg). It plans to deploy the Cardinal system in its fulfillment centers next year.
