…upon with the customer or exceed it,” he said. Honeywell invests in software for smart robots Pick-and-place automation is very software-driven, using machine learning (ML) smarts to enable the solution to adjust to variations in SKUs or packaging. That means the efficacy of pick-and-place robots in the real world rests heavily on software expertise. To support this, Honeywell Robotics has invested in software-related “building blocks” for robotics, said Thomas Evans, CTO of the unit of Honeywell Intelligrated. For example, Honeywell’s Smart Flexible Depalletizer, launched in September, features a robotic arm and AMRs from partners to transport pallets. The robotics control…

…manual, noted Chris Rowland, director of solutions consulting at Honeywell Intelligrated. But manual processing is in the early stages of turning to automation, according to industry experts interviewed for this article. “Automation in reverse logistics is not just a trend, it’s a reality,” explained Monty McVaugh, manager of the product management group at OPEX. He cited several factors beyond the increasing number of returns as e-commerce grows. Increased volume requires increased speed of processing returns, and automation is just faster than manual operations, said McVaugh. Furthermore, labor continues to be a problem. “The longer companies stay with manual processes, the…

Honeywell International Inc. yesterday announced its Smart Flexible Depalletizer, which is designed to help warehouses and distribution centers automate the manual process of unloading pallets. The Charlotte, N.C.-based company said its latest robotic innovation can reducing the operational risks of potential injuries and labor shortages. Driven by machine learning and advances in perception and gripping technologies, Honeywell said its Smart Flexible Depalletizer minimizes the need for human workers to break down pallet loads. Such roles are at risk for safety incidents, experience high turnover, and are currently difficult to fill. A typical midsize to large distribution center unpacks up to…

…says Suzanne McGough, WES product manager at automation provider Honeywell Intelligrated. McGough says: “Our customers are looking at new avenues into advanced automation, which makes WES critical in utilizing those technologies, whether its robotics, other new systems and how to integrate new automation with what they already have.” Since WES is always cognizant of the progress of work in different zones, a key function is bottleneck avoidance, says McGough. In DCs with human pickers, AMRs, and some lift trucks traveling the floor, a WES also devises routes and tasks to avoid congestion. “With warehouse execution’s waveless mentality, it’s continuously releasing…

…quit, says Jason Franklin, director of product management with Honeywell Intelligrated (pictured right). With Honeywell’s LMS, machine learning technology is being used to more accurately predict employee attribution based on historic separations. “The software considers the behaviors individuals in a facility tend to exhibit right before they quit and match it to people who may be in a similar scenario, that allows time to set up an engagement model that could help us avoid that separation and the costs involved.” Work execution insights Lucas Systems isn’t an LMS vendor, but its “Work Execution” software optimizes processes and gives supervisors tools…

…three-year revenue increase of 32%. On last year’s list, Honeywell Intelligrated climbed from sixth to fourth, where it sits with an estimated $1.8 billion in revenues - more than double from three years ago. The number is based on the warehouse automation division of Honeywell’s Safety and Productivity Solutions business. Pieter Krynauw, president of Honeywell Intelligrated, says the company continues to see strong growth in the warehouse automation sector. In 2019, the company released an autonomous robotic unloader that uses artificial intelligence to unload. It also released its Connected Assets offering, which builds on its connected distribution center infrastructure. The…
