Machine Vision/Object Detection

The e-commerce industry is booming, and logistics providers are struggling to keep up with increasingly diverse and unpredictable streams of parcels. This presentation will explore a synergistic human-AI vision system that can effectively mitigate the complexities of parcel variability.

The key insight is that a completely universal automation system — while admirable — is not currently practical on the warehouse floor. Systems based on adaptable AI models are preferable because they’re hyper-focused on responsibilities within their vertical (e.g., parcel handling for warehouse robots) and, therefore, more adept at relevant tasks.

By leveraging remote human assistance for exception handling, these AI systems can focus on the most common scenarios while rapidly absorbing new data to expand their capabilities. Furthermore, this approach reduces the upfront investment required for comprehensive training, leading to faster model updates and better alignment with evolving parcel distributions.

Using real-world case studies and performance data, this session will demonstrate how the strategic integration of human-AI collaboration can unlock new levels of efficiency and reliability in parcel logistics. Attendees will gain insights into adaptive vision systems that thrive amidst the unpredictability of the modern supply chain.

Dr. Dan Grollman,
Principal Software Developer, Plus One Robotics
Dr. Grollman heads research at Plus One Robotics, where the motto is “Robots Work, People Rule.” With over a decade of experience in productizing Human-Robot Interaction (Vecna Technologies, Sphero Inc, Misty Robotics), his work centers on applying academic research to commercial problems.
At Plus One Robotics, his focus is building systems that enable robots and humans to continuously learn from each other. A self-described ‘full stack roboticist,’ Dr. Grollman was a postdoctoral fellow at EPFL, received his Ph.D and Sc.M in Computer Science from Brown University, and his B.S in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Yale.
