Boston Dynamics made the "extremely difficult" decision to lay off 45 employees across the company to support "long-term profitability goals" and "sustainable growth."

Waltham, Mass.-based Boston Dynamics, known best for its humanoid and quadruped robots, recently announced that it will lay off 45 employees.

In a press statement, the company said it has made the “extremely difficult” decision to reduce its total company workforce by 5%. The reductions are company-wide and affect nearly every function throughout its business.

Boston Dynamics said all employees who were impacted will receive severance and benefits continuation, and the company will do everything it can to help them through this “challenging transition.”

“Today is about making a very difficult short-term decision in service of our longer-term strategy and profitability goals,” said Robert Playter, Boston Dynamics CEO, in a message to employees. “This decision was not made lightly.”

Long-term outlook "remains positive”

Playter said the company has grown “very quickly” over the past few years, nearly quadrupling its workforce since 2021.

“Our long-term outlook remains positive,” he added, listing recent successes at Boston Dynamics:

“However, we are also burning through cash at a rate that exceeds our commercial progress to date, and we need to streamline our operations and production processes to support sustainable growth,” Playter said.

At the time of publication, Boston Dynamics listed 22 open full-time job postings on its website, including robot systems engineer and machine learning research positions. Four of those positions were posted within the past week.

Hyundai Motor Company acquired a majority stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021.
