Optimizing operations: Darwynn’s automated storage and retrieval 〈AS/RS〉 success story

The North American warehouse automation market is undergoing rapid changes as it continues to expand and innovate. Canadian e-commerce fulfillment specialist Darwynn provides sellers with localized warehousing, logistics and after-sales services through an integrated e-commerce platform, modularized intelligent warehouse, and seamless integration with multiple logistics platforms.

Darwynn uses a pricing model that eliminates inbound fees and processing for all standardized inbound packaging. It also specializes in minimizing integration costs, optimizing local-to-local delivery and providing nationwide access with no monthly minimums.

When Darwynn was looking for a way to manage the growing number of SKUs being handled by its fulfillment operations it turned to a supplier (HWArobotics) for help streamlining its order fulfillment operations at a site in Toronto.

It implemented the company’s robotic automated storage and retrieval system (shuttle AS/RS) technology, including a 24-cart multi-level shuttle system with 10,368 storage locations and six goods lifts. Storage is configured as three double-deep aisles and eight levels for the efficient parallel operation of multiple shuttle carts.

The goods-to-person system helped Darwynn increase its throughput to 2,400 bins/hour and manage more than 20,000 individual SKUs. With picking stations and warehouse control systems, the shuttle AS/RS was integrated into the third-party logistics (3PL) provider’s end-to-end fulfillment operations and has delivered benefits like optimized inventory management, enhanced operational efficiency and improved warehouse space utilization.

“This project delivered an efficient, reliable, user-friendly and easily maintained multi-level shuttle car intelligent warehouse system,” says Darwynn’s technical director Richard Huang. “We’re very pleased with the performance gains we have seen so far and the potential the solution offers for further expansion. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership.”

Darwynn’s new system has a total inventory capacity of 200,000 items, which means it’s scalable, can meet peak business needs and also adapt as customer demand increases. The company serves a range of industries and has worked with big-name customers like Amazon, eBay and Costco. In August, the 3PL became an authorized fulfillment partner for TEMU’s Canadian Marketplace.
